The traffic corps.
Problem: Our public transit systems are woefully inadequate. The good folks at TARC, bless their hearts, are doing the best they can with what they have. But what they have isn't enough - not nearly enough. Solution: Build it and they will ride. Let's VASTLY expand our bus routes using pollution-free vehicles. Let's build decent bus stop shelters so that our commuters don't have to stand on the grass and in the rain. Build a light rail system across the Ohio River and along the I-65 corridor. Build high speed rail links between Chicago, Louisville, Indianapolis, Cincinnati, St. Louis, and Nashville. Where's the money for all of this going to come from? Take a look at the Security and Iraq pages. Problem: Traffic congestion. Real public transit for a city like Louisville is a distant goal. What do we do in the meantime? Solution: Establish a Traffic Corps. Any engineer will tell you that a human being is the most sophisticated data processing and sensing device ever built. Let's train some humans to control the flow of traffic during rush hour - They'll do a better job than any automated traffic control system ever could. If we can reduce your commute time by even five minutes a day your quality of life will be improved, as will the quality of our air.
